Keeping pets calm through summer storms
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008Since other day, our tomcat started acting odd. He began staying home while our dog began pacing and feeling a bit uncomfortable. Too busy to catch on, it was my son that noticed our pets acted the very same way when storms are coming. We got to talking about it and there were only around 2 incidents that our cat got caught in a summer storm while our pet dog always learned from the only time she escaped right before a heavy down pour.
Being humans we rarely feel any change in air pressure and we are so used to water that any hint of a storm won't cause any agitation. Since all animals rely on other senses, pets too react to these changes and are often gauges of incidents we just wouldn't have known.
Most cats don't climb the walls during storms, before a drop lands they're sure to have found a silent and dark nook to stay in. For some cats, a little assurance and a designated safety nook will ease the dread. A friend of mine moves her cat's bed to a covered place in the home , she' make sure where her cat is put because when emergency strikes it would be easy to reach it. Our cat comes when called, we sort of mastered a call that no one can duplicate and it has worked lots of times. I'd suggest a crate since not all cats stay put, with a hurricane or tornado alert up its easier get at.
While dogs have more control of their fear, a number need calming down. Some are content with their favorite pet toy in its dog bed securely in its crate. Other pets are known to be assured by being a shadow to its owners, or to any member of the family it feels safe with. Though I haven't tried it, there are herbal calming products that keep pets relaxed.
In the event an alert is up in your area, keep your storm shed pet friendly too. Aside from the human emergency kit have pet gear too. A spare dog bed or crate down there will be great to keep your pets huddled safely while the storm howls through.
Emergency planning has to involve pet's needs since they are and always be a part of the family.
